In one of the biggest landslides in presidential election history, Democrat incumbent Lyndon Johnson defeats Republican challenger Barry Goldwater, carrying 44 states and the District of Columbia while winning 61 percent of the popular vote. Only 41 months later, trailing Democratic challenger Bobby Kennedy in key primary states, Johnson shocked the nation by announcing he would not seek his party's nomination.
