My Local HyVee said it was mandatory to use coupons with Upromise but when I contacted HyVee corporate to ask why they said no it was voluntary.
This is how it works, you load electronic coupons with savings star
and Upromise 
on the cards you receive from your local participating stores. You pay full price at the time of the sale and any discounts are sent to your account on Upromise. Once you accumulate $10.00 or more you can request the cash be sent to you.
You can save it up and use it to pay your college loan or save towards college educations for you or someone else. Upromise is run by Fanny Mae.
